What's Coming for Nonprofits in the Salesforce Winter '27 Release

By Erica Bateman

The Winter '27 release will be live in production orgs this October. A key highlight for nonprofits in this release will be the significant enhancements to streamline household management.

In grantmaking, updates will make it easier to standardize application evaluation processes and limit reviewer access to just the sections they need to review. Finally, this release expands guided setup experiences in Salesforce Go to include more support for project management.

Households‍ ‍

Household management has been one of the most persistent sources of manual work in nonprofit fundraising, and Winter '27 addresses it from two directions.

Households Created During Gift Entry ‍

Gift officers can now add a donor to a household directly while entering a gift, rather than entering the gift and then remembering to go build the household relationship afterward.

When a donor doesn't already belong to a household, one is created, and the donor is added to it as part of the same step. This new capability can also support creation of households in bulk when loading Gift Transactions or Gift Commitments through the Business Process API.

Household Names That Stay Accurate

Family compositions change. Marriages, divorces, members moving in and out, and every one of those changes has meant someone manually renaming a household account, or more often, not renaming it and letting the name quietly go stale until it shows up on a mailing.

Winter '27 lets an administrator define naming patterns once. From then on, household names recalculate automatically whenever membership or member details change. There are controls for the order members appear in a name, and for excluding specific people or specific households from automatic naming when you need a hand-crafted exception.

The release also brings more control over whether and how households receive hard and soft credits for donations.‍ ‍

When Can You Test It? ‍

The new household management features will not be available in any orgs (even preview sandboxes) until the Winter '27 release is generally available in October because it will require a new permission set license. There is no additional cost, and the features will be available to all AFNP orgs.

A Self-Service Portal for Program Participants

Winter '27 introduces a Program Participant Portal template for Experience Cloud, with pages, navigation, and components already configured.

Participants can check on their programs, applications, enrollments, benefit assignments and disbursements, and referrals on their own schedule, without calling or emailing.

‍For organizations considering a portal for program participants, this pre-configured template can provide a great head start.

Grant Reviews That Are Consistent and Appropriately Private

Grantmakers get a meaningful improvement to application evaluation.

Reviews can now be standardized using reusable Action Plan Templates on the Application Form Evaluation object, meaning a multi-stage evaluation can follow the same structure every cycle instead of being reassembled by hand each time.

‍Grantmakers will also have more granular control over which parts of an Application reviewers can access. Action Form Evaluation Sections are now available for use with Compliant Data Sharing so you can limit what reviewers see to just the sections they need to evaluate. A reviewer brought in for financial capacity sees the financial sections, and a programmatic reviewer sees the programmatic ones.

Nobody has to see the whole evaluation to contribute their piece, which makes it much easier to bring in external subject-matter reviewers without oversharing or introducing the risk of unconscious bias.

Important note: This functionality is only available to those using the newer Application Form data model. The Individual Application model is still supported, but new feature development such as this will be limited to the newer model.‍

Guided Setup Comes to Programs

This release continues the expansion of Salesforce Go support for nonprofit organizations we saw in the Summer '26 release by bringing the same guided setup experience previously available for Fundraising to Program Management, Case Management, and Outcome Management.

‍Each can now be configured with detailed, step-by-step guidance, and the whole process happens on a single page rather than sending you off to half a dozen places and back. You can also see how features are being used once they're on, and reach learning resources without leaving the flow.
